How Hard Is a Real Erection? Why the Most Realistic Dildo Isn't the Hardest One
Share
Short answer: a real erection is hard on the inside and soft on the outside. Doctors grade hardness from 1 to 4, and a fully hard erection is rigid at its core, but the skin and tissue around it still move and give under pressure. That is why a realistic dildo should not be the hardest one you can find: a firm core with a softer outer layer feels closer to the real thing than a toy that is hard all the way through.
How doctors measure erection hardness
Urologists use the Erection Hardness Score, a simple 4-point scale (overview):
- Larger, but not hard
- Hard, but not hard enough for penetration
- Hard enough for penetration, but not completely hard
- Completely hard and fully rigid
The difference between 3 and 4 matters more than it sounds. In a study of 307 men, successful intercourse rose from about 60% at grade 3 to 93% at grade 4 (Goldstein et al., Journal of Sexual Medicine 2008). Hardness also matters to partners: in a Swedish poll of 688 people, about three in four women said hardness is important for a good sex life, while only 8% said size was the deciding factor (SIFO poll, reported by The Local).
Hard core, soft surface
"Fully rigid" does not mean the penis turns into a rod. The rigidity comes from the erectile tissue filling with blood under pressure. Around it there is skin and a layer of tissue that stay soft and slide over the core. When you squeeze an erect penis, the surface gives a little and then you feel the firmness underneath.

It also bends. In the famous MRI study that filmed couples having sex, the penis in the missionary position took a boomerang shape, and about a third of its length turned out to be the root, inside the body (Weijmar Schultz et al., BMJ 1999). Even a very hard erection follows the curve of the body. A glass toy cannot.
Is harder always better?
For him, a very hard erection usually means strong arousal and good sensation. For her, it can feel exciting: firm to the touch, a sense of fullness and, for some, feeling it pulse. But in practice it has a downside that is rarely discussed (this part comes from experience, not from studies):
- Some positions need a bit of give. Positions where the penis has to point downwards or enter at an angle, such as some rear-entry or side-lying positions, are more comfortable with an erection that adapts a little. A very rigid one goes where it points.
- Angle becomes everything. With a fully rigid erection, the right angle feels great and the wrong one presses on the cervix or the vaginal wall. A slightly softer one forgives small mistakes.

So "hardest" is not the same as "best". The ideal is firm enough to feel full and solid, with a surface that moves and a shape that follows the body. That is exactly what a good realistic dildo tries to copy.
Choosing a realistic dildo by feel
| Type | How it feels | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| Soft (single density) | Soft all the way through, bends easily and follows the body | Beginners, sensitive bodies, positions with a lot of angle. Example: Realistic dildo – Soft |
| Dual density | Firm core with a soft, skin-like outer layer | The closest feel to a real erection. Examples: Sculpture (three sizes, three skin tones) and King Cock Elite. Silexd uses the same idea with a core in Silexpan®. |
| Sliding skin | A thin outer "skin" that slides up and down over the shaft | Copying the way real skin moves over the core. Example: Sliding skin dildo |
A glass toy is the opposite of realism: it does not give and does not bend at all. If you want something that feels like the real thing, choose dual density or sliding skin. More on sizes and suction cups in how to choose a realistic dildo.

Frequently asked questions
Is a real erection completely hard?
At its best (grade 4), the core is fully rigid, but the skin and outer tissue stay soft and move. That combination is what a dual-density dildo copies.
Is a harder dildo more realistic?
No. A toy that is hard all the way through feels more like glass than like skin. A firm core with a softer surface is closer to a real erection.
Does a very hard erection feel better for women?
Many women say hardness matters to them, and it makes penetration easier. But a very rigid erection needs the right angle; in some positions a little flexibility is more comfortable.
Can a dildo bend like a penis?
Soft and dual-density silicone toys bend a little, which helps them follow the body. Glass does not bend at all.
